WS Grain Cleaner Assembly Checklist

Your Sosnowski grain cleaner may arrive partially unassembled for shipping economics. Cleaners shipped on pallets by freight (730 & 1500 models) require less assembly than those shipped in boxes by FedEx (330 model). Minimal assembly may be required but is very simple.

 

Tools needed: 

       - two 10mm & 13mm wrenches 

       - A punch or small screwdriver 

       - Silicone sealant.   

 

If these assembly instructions are followed in the order given, then no back tracking is needed.

 

Laying the cleaner on a table or workbench will make it easy to assemble. Holes are predrilled and pieces are marked specifically where they belong.

This is a 730 model fully assembled

___ Fasten the legs to the machine.  

___ Fasten the center tube section(s).
___ Models 730 & 1500 have leg extensions; model 330 does not (funnels are discontinued). If you will use these for your application, now would be the time to fasten them. The leg extensions install with the horizontal crossbars at the bottom on the outside. The blue leg braces install into the top of the leg extension ends connecting opposing legs. Fastening these with a short self tapping metal screw will provide added stability.  

___ Stand the machine erect on the floor.   

___ Install the hopper. Starting all the bolts and nuts first by hand before tightening any will be the easiest. A punch or small screw driver may be used to line up the holes.   

___ Bolt the exhaust elbow to the machine.   

___ Bolt the elbow deflector on the underside of the round part of the exhaust (models 730 & 1500).  

___ Three brackets are bolted to the outside top of the round part of the exhaust.   

___ The lower exhaust rim is attached to the bottom of the brackets.   

___ Install the exhaust cloth, clamping the top and bottom securely.   

___ A bead of silicone will seal off the hopper neck and any other space on the tube sections to help the machine operate at maximum efficiency.

 

*Please note: A power cord and plug is included with your machine. Installed switches are discontinued because of government regulations. Just the approval for an installed switch would add almost $1,000 to the cost of the machine. If you need one, you can install your own switch or hire a qualified person to do it for you.  

Moving the Grain Cleaner   

Three anchor rings are located near the top of the machine. Attach a lifting harness to the rings to move your cleaner around in a safe manner. Also the cleaner can be moved short distances easily by attaching a strap to the legs and pulling. Another method to move the cleaner around is to mount it on a wooden frame. A pallet jack or loader with forks can then be used to transport it although care needs to be taken with this method because the machines are slightly top heavy. Do not allow the cleaner to fall over. Always hold the machine securely when moving it around.  

​Hints For Handling Super Sack Fabric Totes

1. For repairing small holes in bulk sacks, place pieces of plastic bale wrap tape on the inside and the outside of the sack over the hole. The tape on one side will stick to the tape on the other side through the hole. It tends to stay put! 

2. Using pallets with extra wide spaces between slats or using ones with broken slats will cause the filled sacks to sag into the wide spaces. This is a prime target for tearing a hole into the sack with a pallet fork. The grain flow won’t stop easy! 

3. Cutting holes in pallets to bottom unload bulk sacks is not a good idea. Pallets will break much easier and increase the chances for tearing holes in sacks. The likelihood for accidents to occur increases. Build a strong 44” X 44” pallet out of 2” X 4” material and thick plywood for this purpose. Frame a 16” X 16” hole in the center for easy unloading. Use this pallet exclusively for unloading bulk sacks.   

4. Lifting a filled bulk sack by the handles will stretch the sack upright so it will sit upright better.

Auger Hopper

The bottom of a 30 or 50 gallon barrel can be used as a hopper for collecting the cleaned seed at the bottom of the cleaner. To cut a barrel, first hold a marker over the top edge of a five gallon pail and turn the barrel around as you mark a line around the outside of the barrel and cut with a skillsaw.  

Cut a slot as wide as your auger tube down 3” from the top edge of your cut barrel. Cut out a curve at the bottom of your slot to fit the contour of your auger tube. You want this slot to fit snugly around the auger tube so seed doesn’t leak out.   

For handles, cut two 12” pieces of nylon straps. Drill holes through both ends of these straps as well as both sides of the cut barrel. Fasten a strap to each side of the cut barrel with a small bolt.

 

Ideal Cleaner Setup  

A grain cleaner setup is ideal when there is an auger that brings the grain to the cleaner hopper and another one that takes away the clean seed from the bottom of the machine.

Clamping a used feed bag to the very bottom of the exhaust assembly will collect the winnowings. For cleaning large quantities of grain, a bulk sack hung on a rack under the exhaust elbow will provide greater efficiency. The top of the bulk sack needs to be fastened to the bottom of the exhaust assembly. The fabric on the exhaust allows the air to escape while the winnowings will collect in the bag.

WS Scalper Setup and Operation

The best setup of the WS Scalper is to run grain through the Sosnowski grain cleaner first and then through the WS Scalper. This will optimize and streamline the action of the equipment. With only one screen inserted into the top slot of the screen box, the remainder of the largest foreign particles will be scalped from the grain.

The WS Scalper should be placed on a fairly level surface and anchored through the feet of each leg. Any of the Sosnowski grain cleaner models 330, 730 or 1500 may be installed on top of the WS Scalper frame. We do not recommend using the leg extensions that come with the 730 and 1500 models with this setup. The 2 X 4 rail on top of the frame will need to be moved so it will support the legs of the grain cleaner. Screws inserted through the toes of the legs will keep it stable and in place. Additional stabilizers may be needed depending on your application. Never allow your grain cleaner to fall.

 

The angle of the WS Scalper is adjustable to help regulate the flow of grain across the screen. Only experience will reveal which angle will be the most optimum for the crop you are cleaning. To change screens, remove the bottom end of the screen box and insert the desired screen. Reinstall the end of the box again. The deflector guide on top of the box end can be switched to the other side if needed to divert the large trash or be removed completely.

We recommend using a second screen only when cleaning splits out of soybeans, lentils or peas. This screen should be sized so the good grain will not fall through but the splits will. It is then inserted into the bottom slot of the screen box. Only when using the bottom screen does the bottom trash diverter need to be used. This will divert the splits away from the clean grain.

The WS Scalper comes equipped with one screen (size 12 round) suitable for wheat and rye. A bottom screen is recommended only if you want to clean out splits from soybeans, peas or lentils. Keep the WS Scalper and screens in a dry place away from moisture. Do not store it in the direct sun for long periods of time. Service bearings with one pump of grease before using and every 50 hours of use thereafter.

Operating A Sosnowski Grain Cleaner

The following are instructions to help you get a jump start on using your Sosnowski grain cleaner:

1. Complete the setup of your machine

2. Open the grain flow all the way.

3. Set the air flow to an approximate starting point. (Oats, spelt, barley about 1/2; wheat, rye about 3/4; corn, soybeans and peas all the way)

4. Turn the machine on.

5. Pour a scoop of grain into the machine.

6. Examine what falls down the center tube at the bottom and what comes out the exhaust. 

7. Adjust the air flow either more or less. Increasing the air flow will cause more of what fell down the center tube to go out the exhaust. Decreasing the air flow will do the opposite.

8. Repeat steps 5, 6, & 7 until you are satisfied with the separation.

9. Start the grain flow to and from the cleaner.

10. Continue to monitor the separation and make air adjustments as needed . . . and then, best of all, let 'er run!
